Spotlights on the Contemporary Video Art and Dance from Taiwan

《ECO AS A VERB》&《TAIWAN VIDEA2.0》

The oldest international art film festival in the world takes place in the mountain town of the northern Italy－Asolo. In 1973, it was founded by Flavia Paulon, a significant figure of Venice International Film Festival. The 35^th edition of Asolo Art Film Festival is coming around on September 10-18, 2016. The magnificent scenery of Asolo was fascinated by many Italian Old Masters, like Giorgione, Andrea Palladio, Paolo Veronese, Antonio Canova. This year’s festival will focus on “Animae” to concern about life, ecology and spirit. Taiwanese curator Yunnia Yang is invited to curator the focal theme video exhibition for the 35^th edition, presenting the curatorial concept “Eco As A Verb”. The majority know about Most people know to love the planet and raise the environmental awareness, but there are big steps from awareness to actions. The green documentaries or contemporary videos here are nor to initiate another environmental activism, but to suggest that after watching these films each viewer may think what he can do by his own for the good sake of our environment to improve the current situation. There is no need to make any alliance, but to be touched, then just do it! Although the notion “Eco as a Verb” is proposed in the 35^th Asolo Art Film Festival, we truly hope it can work in practice all over the world. The focal theme project“Eco As A Verb” includes five categories: “Eco Creativity”, “Eco Apocalypse”, “Eco-Human Chain”, “Eco Mythology”, and “Special Focus: Dancecology”.

In addition, the curator Yunnia Yang has receive great comments on the Taiwanese Avant-Garde Video Exhibition《TAIWAN VIDEA》and the International Creative Video Exhibition《Imagining Crisis》for the 34^th edition. The film festival organizer ALA(Armonioso Labirinto Asolano) continues to invite her to curate the video art project《TAIWAN VIDEA2.0:Cultural Encounter》, experiencing a culture in more internal ways instead of making a stereotype of it. Eleven videos will present the nomadic perceptions of these Taiwanese artists while they are travelling, studying aboard, having a exhibition or a residency in a foreign country. With the spirit of Baudelaire’s “ flâneur”, the cultural encounters of the artists cannot be put in words for the artists instill their own life experiences into this process of cultural encounters. In their artworks, viewers may perceive alternative cultural understandings, to overturn the cultural stereotypes given by this commercialized world, to encounter multiple cultures with sensibility.

Dancecology’s “ Flowing Landscape” as Opening/Closing Performances

Fusing the notion of ecology into the contemporary choreography, Dancecology from Taiwan is one of the kind. Founded in 2009, the artistic director Peng Hsiao-Yin employs the concept of “Circulation and Coexistence” from ecological system to create organic movements, in the form of interdisciplinary arts to invite all the audience to experience the aesthetics coexistent with environment and space. For the 30^th edition in 2011 , Dancecolgy presented “ Dancing of Time”, which spread out the energy of dancing all over Asolo. Just like an aesthetic reflection of a plant’s growing strength and nature itself. This works was favored by film audience and local inhabitants. In the 35^th anniversary, Dancecolgy would like to dedicate to the metaphor of life color with the new work “ Flowing Landscape” as the opening / closing performances and “Whisper in Town" series, in memory of the spiritual leader of Asolo Art Film Festival –Attilio Zamperoni. Besides, since 2012 Dancecolgy explores the filmic language of Dance Video, continues to bring the ecological concern into videos. This edition will present six Dance Videos of Dancecolgy.

Internationally Well-Known Artists to Gather in Asolo for “Animae”

The theme “Animae” of the 35^th edition is so unusual to devote to the spiritual leader of Asolo Art Film Festival- Attilio Zamperoni, who passed away unexpectedly this June, in memory of his long-term efforts to glorify the significance of Asolo with the art film festival. Despite many difficulties, the festival team decides to overcome them and fulfill Attilio’s art passions as a flaming phoenix and gives out excellent programs this year. Following the 34^th edition’s “BRICS Art”, the team prepares the program of creative videos and interdisciplinary arts from the BRICS countries (Russia, Brazil, China, India, South Africa and Italy) to enrich international visions and multiple viewpoints. The Indian-born music maestro Zubin Mehta will be awarded with Asolo City Award for the Cultural Dialogue for his musical contribution. It will be screened the German film director Bettina Ehrhardt’s “ Allegro with Fire. The Musical World of Zubin Mehta”. The Indian film director Mike Pandey, who is well-known for his great devotions to animal protections, is invited to screen several representative films, including the“Green Oscar”award-winning film 《Shores of Silence - Whale Sharks in India》. Besides screening the films in competition, there are special screening programs from AVIFF (France) , GO Film Festival(Brazil), and Russian film delegation VGIK.

Expert in Surrealism. Fascinating with Salvador Dali’s ‘Paranoiac Criticism’, Yunnia Yang has an insight into the experimental spirit and unlimited creativity of interdisciplinary arts. She has received the S-An Aesthetics Award with thethesis “Irrational Narration. Myth Making: On the ‘ Angelus myth’ created by Salvador Dalí with the concept ‘Paranoiac-Criticism’” in 2010. In the same year, she has delivered the academic paper ‘Uncovering Alice’s Cabin of Curiosities: on the Sadomasochism of Infantile Imagination in the film ‘Něco z Alenky’ of Jan Švankmajer, in the 6th International Symposium of Surrealism in United Kingdom.For the concern of the impact of media obsession in our lives, Yunnia has curated the experimental performance ‘Manic Depression: The Shadow-Image-Sound Complex’ in the Museum ofContemporary Art (MOCA) in Taipei in 2011.

Yunnia Yang has received the Master degree in Art History from St. Petersburg State University in Russia in 1997, and Doctor degree in Arts from National Taiwan Normal University in 2009. During this period, she managed all kinds of exhibitions, performances, and art events for the institutions of arts, literature and culture in Taiwan. Since 2011, she has launched the long-term curatorial research on ‘ The Postmodern Condition in the contemporary art of Russia and Eastern Europe’ in cooperation with the following art institutions: National Center for Contemporary Arts in Moscow(Russia), the Executive Committee of ‘ Night of Museum in St. Petersburg’(Russia), Agency for Contemporary Art (ACAX) of Ludwig Museum in Budapest(Hungary), Opekta Ateliers Köln(Germany),contemporary art institutions in Balkan region, Contemporary Art Foundation(Taiwan), National Culture and Arts Foundation(Taiwan) and Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government(Taiwan).This project will be realized in form of thematic exhibitions and monographs.

In 2013, Yunnia Yang was invited by WRO Media Art Biennale to curate the exhibition ' ‘ The Apocalyptic Sensibility: The New Media Art from Taiwan’. The premiere of the artworks from Taiwan in WRO Biennale: Wu Chi-Tsung's 'Crystal City' and Lin PeyChwen's 'Eve Clone' series. With 'Crystal City', Wu Chi-Tsung won WRO 2013 Award- Award of Critics and Editors of Art Magazines.From September 26 till November 15 in 2015, the Homecoming Exhibition from WRO Media Art Biennale 2013 ‘The Apocalyptic Sensibility: The New Media Art from Taiwan’ will be held at Taipei Fine Art Museum in Taiwan. It will give a complete picture of the curatorial philosophy ‘ The Apocalyptic Sensibility’ with the works of the six Taiwanese artists: Chi-Tsung Wu, Pey-Chwen Lin, Zan-Lun Huang, Scottie Chih-Chieh Huang, I-Chun Chen, and Zhang Xu Zhan. They look into the technologized civilization with new sensibilities so that we will have deeper perceptions and contemplations about the consumerism and the media society which we live in.

Hong Kong World Cultures Festival 2013 has been devoted to the focal theme ‘Lasting Legacies of Eastern Europe’, and has organized the exhibition‘East+Europe: Eastern European Contemporary Art Exhibition’. Yunnia Yang has been invited to its international symposium‘Imagination of Eastern Europe’ ( Participating Speakers, including Leung Mee-ping (Curator of “East + Europe: Eastern European Contemporary Art Exhibition),Solvita Krese (Director of Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art),Lukasz Surowiec (Polish artist),Neno Belchev (Bulgarian artist),and Pavlina Mladenova (Bulgarian artist)). In the symposium, Yunnia Yang shared her two-year research and observation on Russia and Eastern Europe. Since 2011, Yunnia Yang has written several articles on the contemporary arts of Russia and Eastern Europe for Taiwanese art journals ‘Art Investment’ and‘Art Collection + Design’. In addition, The Chinese University of Hong Kong has invited her to write the keynote article ‘Constructing the National Mythology of Utopia: Development of the Russian Art in the Twentieth Century' for the University’s Bimonthly Review 'Twentieth-First Century' on February 2014.

Besides the curatorial project “ The Apocalyptic Sensibility: The New Media Art from Taiwan”(WRO Media Art Biennale 2013, Taipei Fine Art Museum in 2015) introspecting our technologized civilization, Yunnia Yang concerns particularly about the influences of the contemporary visual culture and curates various creative video exhibitions. In 2014, she curated the International Creative Video Exhibition “Imagining Crisis” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei. This video project has toured around the contemporary art centers in Poland, Serbia, Bulgaria and Colombia. In 2015, Yunnia Yang is invited by the 34th Asolo Art Film Festival to curate the two video projects “ Imagining Crisis” and “ Taiwan VIDEA: the Taiwanese Avant-garde Video Exhibition”. In 2016, she is also invited by Asolo Art Film Festival Committee to present “Eco as a verb” as Focal Theme Exhibition of the 35th edition film festival and another video project “Taiwan VIDEA2.0:Cultural Encounter” .In May of 2017, these two projects has been invited by the Museum of nonconformist art (MoNA) and the Pushkinskaya-10 art centre to to participate in the official program of the St. Petersburg Museum Night 2017.In addition, the curator Yunnia Yang has been invited by the 34th-35th Asolo Art Film Festival as an international jury and has eventually been selected by the international jury board as the President of the 34th Asolo Art Film Festival's International Jury Board. Dr. Yunnia Yang is currently the Adjunct Associate Professor of the Department of Sculpture at the National Taiwan University of Arts.

楊衍畇/策展人,藝術史學者,藝評人

長期專注於超現實主義的研究，著迷於達利的「偏執狂批判」，楊衍畇極為推崇跨領域藝術的實驗精神與無限創意。她曾於2010年以論文〈瘋狂敘事‧建構神話－論達利以「偏執狂批判」創造之「晚禱神話」〉獲得世安美學論文獎，同年於英國舉辦的國際超現實主義研討會中發表〈論Jan Svankmajer電影「愛麗絲夢遊仙境」中兒童想像力之虐戀特質〉。憂心媒體過度影響到我們的精神生活，她曾在2011年於台北當代藝術館策劃製作「躁鬱症」影－音互動實驗表演。

1997年取得於俄羅斯聖彼得堡大學藝術史碩士，2009年獲得國立臺灣師範大學美術研究所博士，期間她為藝術經紀公司、文化基金會、與國際書展單位策劃各類型的展演活動。自 2011年起，她展開長程的策展研究計畫「俄羅斯與東歐當代藝術之後現代情境研究」，國際合作單位包括莫斯科當代藝術中心(俄羅斯) 、「聖彼得堡博物館之夜」執行委員會（俄羅斯）、布達佩斯路德威希當代藝術館國際當代藝術交流機構（匈牙利）、科隆Opekta 藝術工作室(德國)、巴爾幹地區當代藝術中心，陸續由國內的當代藝術基金會與國家文藝基金會支持贊助。該計畫將會在未來以主題策展與出版專文實踐。

2013年受波蘭媒體雙年展邀請策畫「末日感性：臺灣新媒體藝術展」，展出台灣藝術家吳季璁「水晶城市」及林珮淳「夏娃克隆」系列作品，吳季璁「水晶城市」獲得國際評審青睞，勇奪波蘭媒體雙年展首獎-藝術雜誌評論與編輯大獎(WRO 2013Award-Award of Critics and Editors of Art Magazines)。2015年9月26日至11月15日將於北美館舉辦「末日感性：臺灣新媒體藝術」波蘭返國展，將呈現「末日感性」策展意念的全貌，吳季璁、林珮淳、黃贊倫、黃致傑、陳依純、張徐展六位藝術家以新感性思維看待科技文明，處於消費主義與媒體社會影響的我們將會有更深刻的感受與省思。

2013年香港世界文化藝術節以「東歐芳華」為主題策畫「東+歐:東歐當代藝術展」，受邀於香港大會堂參與「想像東歐」國際座談會(座談講者包括香港策展人梁美萍、拉脫維亞當代藝術中心總監Solvita Krese、波蘭藝術家Łukasz Surowiec 、保加利亞藝術家Neno Belchev、保加利亞藝術家Pavlina Mladenova )，在座談會中分享兩年來的研究觀察。2011年迄今，陸續於「典藏投資」、「藝術收藏+設計」發表多篇以俄羅斯與東歐當代藝術為議題的評論與觀察專文，香港中文大學「二十一世紀」雙月刊邀稿撰文「建構烏托邦的國家神話：二十世紀俄羅斯藝術發展」，於2014年2月號發表。

除策畫反思科技文明的「末日感性：臺灣新媒體藝術展」(2013年波蘭媒體雙年展、2015年台北市立美術館)，楊衍畇特別關注當代視覺文化的影響力，策畫各類創意錄像展覽，2014年於台北當代藝術館策劃「危奇觀」(Imagining Crisis)國際創意影像展，已國際巡迴至波蘭、塞爾維亞、保加利亞、哥倫比亞等國當代藝術中心展出，2015-2016連續兩年榮獲世界歷史悠久的國際藝術影展－義大利阿索洛國際藝術影展(Asolo Art Film Festival)之邀，策劃「危奇觀」與 “TAIWAN VIDEA”台灣前衛影像展(2015)，2016年該藝術影展主題展"生態作為動詞"(Eco as a Verb)與“TAIWAN VIDEA2.0:文化秘遇”。2017年5月, 兩項錄像主題展更榮獲俄羅斯“普希金10號”當代藝術中心與俄羅斯反傳統藝術美術館之邀參加2017聖彼得堡博物館之夜。此外，策展人楊衍畇獲影展主辦單位邀請為這兩屆影展國際評審，並由評審團遴選為第34屆義大利阿索洛國際藝術影展國際評審團主席(2015)。楊衍畇博士現職為國立台灣藝術大學雕塑系兼任助理教授。
